Breast cancer is leading killer of women in developing countries ...

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month Purdue University is hosting a global symposium to help fight the disease here and abroad.

Medical professionals from more than 20 countries have come together at Purdue to discuss prevention and how education and a country's public policy can affect survival rate.

Breast Care International President Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai says women in less-developed countries wait too long before getting help.

"Because breast cancer is not a painful disease from the beginning, women can afford to sit months and years,? Dr. Addai said. ?They think that because there is no pain, there is no danger. So we thought, ?We can't sit and wait for them to come to us too late.? We had to travel to them."

According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the leading killer of women in developing countries.

The symposium will continue through Friday.
