How to patch hardwood floorboards | merrypad

The honest to gosh-darn-goodie truth about this project? I refinished the hardwood floors shortly after moving in, and in doing a thorough job at the time, I removed a threshold that sat beneath the bifold door in my stairwell closet. There are a number of reasons I never reinstalled the little sucker, but I attribute it mostly to the fact that the threshold sat a little too proud and impeded the smooth flow of the closet door opening and closing. Off with it?s head. Of course, removing it for the sake of refinishing the floors and deciding not to reinstall doesn?t mean that I didn?t?for whatever reason leave the threshold sitting directly next to the closet in the stairwell. It?s such a weird thing for me to have done, admittedly, something comparable to leaving a pair of holey socks on the bathroom floor? for three years.

An actively ignored problem area in my home. What's MIA? Hardwood floorboards.

I did ambitiously?replace the trim and the bifold door earlier this year, and the new smooth-operatin? door made it even more apparent that the floor needed to repaired fully. I wish I could say that it was one of those half-done home improvement projects that you can disguise by shutting the closet door, but as you can see in that above picture it was always pretty obvious that the floorboards ended abruptly. Even worse, the closet looked especially menacing when I had the bifold door open, exposing a legit black hole into the depths between the floor and first story?s ceiling. If you really want to know, it?s filled horrifically with dog fur, scraps of drywall (from previous homeowners, I presume), dirt, screws, pieces of wood, and unreachable toys. For real.

Where the floor is lacking hardwoods, one might find a black hole of grossness.

I?ve some sense of ambition to complete this project ever since I salvaged some oak floorboards a few months ago. Flashback to the springtime of 2012: Pete and I stumbled on a roadside stash of oak floorboards in our neighborhood, a towering pile from which we selected about 20 boards, complete with originally thorny nails, and carefully drove them home to recycle and repurpose. The nails themselves came out easily, and the clean boards have been ready for a new project for quite a while now. Most of our stash is pretty damage-free. Boards that we left behind on the side of the road were?noticeably?water-damaged or scratched, but our supply is exceptional.

The hardwood flooring jackpot.

These salvaged floorboards, while being very close in color to the natural hardwoods that already flow through my home, are slightly wider, but in this case where the extra boards would be used in a doorway to a closet, I wasn?t concerned about them looking out of place to the untrained eyeball.

The salvaged floorboards are a bit different than the existing ones in our home, but they will work.

To patch the offending gap in the wooden floor, I decided to employ a few of these boards and the nail gun loaded with 1-1/2? brads. After measuring the space, I cut the first board to length.

Measuring the doorway for new hardwood floorboards.

The most notable issue as I prepared to install this first board was that the existing floorboard on the edge had suffered quite a bit of damage over time. Not only did it appear to have been sawn unevenly lengthwise in one section, but it was also gouged in three other areas. The damage was very obvious when I tried to line up a new board flush to the old edge.

Four notable points of distress on the existing hardwood floorboard.

The easy solution was to remove that troubled and damaged floorboard with a pry bar, and replace it with one of the scrap boards.

Removing the offending hardwood floorboard gently with a pry bar.

As I prepped the area, I also removed the base shoe trim. The new floorboard that I installed was sized to fit easily in the space that the existing board occupied and it went in effortlessly. You can really see here how close in original color and width these salvaged floorboards are to the originals, save for some staining on the boards in my own staircase.

Patching the hardwood floors.

All other floorboards in the home are?noticeably?nailed from the top of the board, which is why I turned to the nail gun to install these salvaged piece too. The gun releases the nail with enough power for it to anchor slightly beneath the surface of the board, rendering the nail heads nearly invisible and barely discernible to the touch.

I took one measly shortcut in this project. What I will note is that because the bifold door was installed already, I installed the floorboards around the metal base that you see in these pictures. I could have removed the metal footer, shortened the entire bifold door an inch, reinstalled the footer, and been left with a gap greater than 1? between the bottom of the door and the top of the floorboards. This worked better, and I won?t be replacing the door myself again anytime soon so I expect it to serve us quite nicely.

I had some scraps of base shoe from when I did the bathroom, office, and kitchen, so I fit in a few custom cut pieces to suit the newly repaired stairwell and caulked the joints clean.

Repairing the base shoe trim in the stairwell.

It should go without saying, but it is obvious that these new floorboards were installed after the existing floor. They?re much, um, nicer than the boards that occupy the rest of the landing, the ones that look like they were peed on repeatedly. I should note that the discolorations on the existing floorboards were found when I removed the carpet and remained prominent even after the floors were refinished. Please let this be enough reason for you to never spill/urinate/saturate the carpet that covers your home?s natural hardwoods. I?m optimistic that with a quick sanding and refinishing of this landing that the new boards will blend in a little more naturally.

I patched new hardwoods in the stairwell. Is it obvious that they're in much better condition than the rest of the floor?

With the trim repaired and the door back on, the unsightly gap in the floorboards is now fully corrected. Checking this off my list was a make-me-feel-good moment if I?ve never had one before.

Repaired stairwell doorway, complete with fresh trim and new hardwood floorboards.

P.S. I?ve never built a dog house, but after scoping out a gallery on DIY Network you can be sure it?s on my list for springtime. See the modern designs that I liked best in today?s bonus post on The Pegboard!

The case of six Italian scientists sentenced to be jailed for failing to warn of the L'Aquila earthquake in Italy in 2009 highlights the difficult task facing scientists in dealing with risk communication and uncertainty.

We deal with risks and uncertainty all the time in our daily lives. Weather forecasts do not come with guarantees and despite the death tolls on our roads we continue to use bikes, cars, and buses. We have also long built our homes and workplaces in areas known to have a history of earthquakes, floods, or volcanic activity.

Much as society and governments would like science to provide simple, clear-cut answers to the problems that we face, it is not always possible. Scientists can, however, gather all the available evidence and offer an analysis of the evidence in light of what they do know. The sensible course is to turn to expert scientists who can provide evidence and advice to the best of their knowledge. They will sometimes be wrong, but we must not allow the desire for perfection to be the enemy of good.

That is why we must protest the verdict in Italy. If it becomes a precedent in law, it could lead to a situation in which scientists will be afraid to give expert opinion for fear of prosecution or reprisal. Much government policy and many societal choices rely on good scientific advice and so we must cultivate an environment that allows scientists to contribute what they reasonably can, without being held responsible for forecasts or judgments that they cannot make with confidence.

Shark kills surfer Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. off Surf Beach in California

After a rash of shark sightings this year in California, one man is dead after an attack today near Surf Beach northwest of Los Angeles.

The Associated Press identified the man as 39-year-old Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., who died after the shark bit him in the chest or torso.

?A friend who he was surfing with who saw the shark bite or hit the man ? ended up swimming over and pulling him from the water where he received first aid,? Sgt. Mark A. Williams told the AP.

The attack happened near Vandenberg Air Force Base, but Solorio was not a soldier or employee there, military officials told the AP.

More from GlobalPost: Sharks to be killed on site in Western Australia

The Air Force allows public access to some of its beaches, CNN said, and the base fire department responded to the call for help.

There was no confirmation on what kind of shark attacked the surfers, although authorities did say they found bite marks on Solorio's?s surfboard.

The attack happened today about 11 am in Lompoc, 150 miles northwest of LA, ABC News said.

A wildlife expert would work Wednesday to determine what kind of shark is responsible, ABC reported.

Officials issued warnings after shark attacks on separate kayakers in May and July, the AP said.

A surfer spotted a 14-foot Great White last month, prompting authorities in Santa Barbara Harbor to post warning signs.

Two years ago near Surf Beach, 19-year-old university student Lucas Ransom died after a shark nearly severed his leg, AP said.

Surf Beach was closed until further notice Tuesday.

"We've had shark sightings up and down the Santa Barbara coastline pretty frequently recently," Lt. Erik Raney told the AP.

China factories eye stronger fourth quarter, external risks remain

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's factory output should grow faster in the last three months of 2012 than in the third quarter, though the recovery remains clouded by uncertainty in export markets, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said on Thursday.

Month-on-month improvements in output growth, an apparent turnaround signaled by a private sector survey of purchasing managers and an uptick in preliminary power generation data were all indications of a burgeoning recovery, the ministry spokesman and chief engineer, Zhu Hongren, told a news conference.

"The industry sector performance has shown signs of stabilization and we can see an even clearer growing trend from the month-on-month figures in the third quarter," Zhu said.

"Therefore, we expect that industrial output growth in the fourth quarter would be faster than that in Q3, which will help the country to achieve its annual economic growth target of 7.5 percent," he added.

But a ministry statement issued before the news conference began was focused more on the risks of weak external demand, rising production costs, financing strains and squeezed profit margins across China's industrial complex.

"The stabilization trend of China's industrial sector is not yet solid and we are still facing many challenges and difficulties to realize stable growth," the ministry's earlier statement said.

"Although export growth rebounded in September, it is still very difficult to see a stable growth in exports of industrial products in future due to shrinking external demand," the statement said.

A festering debt crisis in China's biggest foreign market, the European Union, has dented demand for goods coming off assembly lines in the vast factory sector and ultimately weighed on the domestic economy.

Exports were worth 31 percent of GDP in 2011, according to the World Bank, and supported an estimated 200 million Chinese jobs.

The written statement echoes that from Commerce Ministry spokesman, Shen Danyang, who said last week that one month's solid trade data was not sufficient evidence of a recovery trend given complications in the external sector.

A jump in annual export growth in September to 9.9 percent, roughly twice the rate expected by investors, has led some analysts to conclude that recovery in the external sector is gathering momentum.

The downturn in China's main markets has been the main cause of the rapidly cooling growth in the export-sensitive economy since 2011's 9.2 percent expansion.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect to China's economic growth to slow to 7.7 percent for the full year in 2012 - a 13 year low.

RECOVERY SIGNS TENTATIVE

Tentative signs of recovery in China's vast factory sector though came on Wednesday in the HSBC China Flash Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for October, which showed new orders at their highest in six months and output at a three month peak.

But while the headline PMI index rose to a three month high of 49.1, it was still below the 50-point mark that separates expanding from shrinking business activity.

In the world's second biggest economy where industrial output expanded at a 9.2 percent annual rate in September, it implies that while China's factories are growing, they are doing so more slowly than previously.

The PMI survey also found, however, that stocks of purchases were their strongest since July while stocks of finished goods were at their weakest since March, which implies an upturn in orders will be met by a rise in factory output.

China's annual industrial output growth was 10 percent in the first nine months of 2012, leaving it below the Ministry's 11 percent target for the year.

Premier Wen Jiabao said earlier this month that the economy is showing positive changes and the government is confident it can achieve its full-year economic growth target of 7.5 percent.

Beijing has been following a program of pro-growth fine tuning of economic policies for a year and analysts broadly expect that to remain in place when a new leadership line-up of the ruling Communist Party is unveiled at a Congress next month.

The fine tuning includes two interest rate cuts, three reductions in the portion of deposits banks must keep as reserves (RRR) - freeing an estimated 1.2 trillion yuan ($190 billion) for lending.

There were also approvals in September for infrastructure projects worth about $157 billion, although Beijing has not said explicitly where the money to fund them is coming from.

China's overall economic growth accelerated to 2.2 percent quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter from an upwardly revised 2.0 percent rate in the second quarter, data showed last week, further reinforcing views of some analysts that a recovery is beginning to take hold.

Lawsuit shows A&F CEO's finicky travel habits - seattlepi.com

NEW YORK (AP) ? When it comes to flying, it seems that Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Michael S. Jeffries is obsessed with the details.

A 40-plus page manual that was filed with court documents in relation to an age discrimination suit by a former pilot outlined a list of instructions for crew members aboard the CEO's Gulfstream jet that stipulated everything from how to arrange the toilet paper to what type of cologne should be worn.

Among the details: the male flight crew had to wear a hat, sunglasses, gloves, boxer briefs and a spritz of A&F41. Jeffries also didn't want the toilet paper to be "exposed" and the end square should be folded. As for current issues of magazines like Bloomberg Businessweek or Fortune, they had to be kept in the right side of the credenza. Crew members should always check for fingerprints on the credenza, cabin door, galley door, ledges and the cabinet doors in the lavatory. And the crew has to play the song "Take Me Home" when passengers entered the cabin for the return flight.

Details of the manual, first reported by Bloomberg News late last week, were part of the documents in an age discrimination lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 2010 by former pilot Michael Stephen Bustin, now 55. According to the court papers, Bustin argued he was terminated because of his age so he could be replaced by a younger pilot more in keeping with the company's youthful image. He had piloted Jeffries' Gulfstream from February 2008 until his firing in December 2009.

A&F has dismissed the claims in court documents. Lawyers for Bustin couldn't be immediately reached. Calls to A&F's investor relations weren't immediately returned on Sunday.

The flight manual comes to light as A&F is struggling to sell its preppy jeans and T-shirts at a time when fashion trends are shifting and a rough economy has left teens around the world on tighter budgets. A&F shares, which are hovering around $32, are down more than 30 percent since the beginning of the year. They have lost more than half their value in the past 12 months. A&F reported in August that its profit plunged by more than half in the second quarter as revenue at stores open at least a year fell 10 percent.

A&F also disclosed in August that it will put a hold on opening any additional flagship stores and scale back on the number of locations it opens abroad, in part to prevent stores in international markets from cannibalizing sales from each other. A&F announced in June that it was closing 180 U.S. stores over the next few years. The New Albany, Ohio-based chain had already closed 135 underperforming U.S. stores in two years.

Jeffries, who has been chief executive since 1992 and chairman since 1998, has been responsible for creating its sexy image, fueling lots of controversy. About seven years ago, A&F, known for its racy advertising and scantily clad models outside its stores, had to pay $40 million to several thousand minority and female plaintiffs who charged the chain with discrimination. The settlement also stipulated that A&F has to implement policies and programs to recruit diversity among its workforce.

As for the rulebook for his Gulfstream staffers, it underscores Jeffries' attention to meticulous details, particularly how he wants his flight crew dressed. For example, hats should be worn only when the temperature is below 40 degrees. The brim of the hat should be two inches thick and it should be pulled so that it's about in the middle of the forehead. When wearing a winter coat, the crew has to zip the jacket up to the fourth button from the bottom. The lowest button should be left undone, but the next three buttons up should be fastened. Jeans should sit at the hips, according to the rulebook.

Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst at NBG Productions, said that the manual underscores Jeffries' overall management style.

"None of this is surprising. This story highlights how much control he has over the company, and how much he has hurt the company and how much he has hurt shareholders," he said. A&F, for example, has been late to react to the slowing economy, particularly its move to curb its international expansion, he said.

Credit-card fee settlement sent for U.S. judge's approval

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A proposed $7.2 billion settlement between merchants and Visa Inc and Mastercard Inc over credit-card fees was submitted Friday for approval by a federal judge, setting in motion what will be a contentious and closely watched battle over the fate of the potentially historic pact.

If it receives preliminary and then final approval from U.S. District Judge John Gleeson in Brooklyn, it would be the largest federal antitrust settlement in U.S. history, resolving seven years of price-fixing litigation brought on behalf of nearly 8 million merchants.

Visa, Mastercard and banks that issue their cards would pay $6.05 billion and offer $1.2 billion in temporary relief on interchange, or swipe, fees paid by merchants to process credit and debit transactions. The card companies will also revise their no-surcharge rules to let stores charge customers extra for paying with certain cards.

Since it was announced in July, the proposal has been opposed by some of the largest U.S. retailers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc, and trade groups like the National Retail Federation. Ten of the 19 original stores and trade groups leading the litigation have also come out in opposition. They have argued that the settlement offers no meaningful reform and would force them to give up the right to sue over swipe fees in the future.

"The lawyers and handful of retailers who support the settlement do not represent the retail industry," said Mallory Duncan, senior vice-president and general counsel for the National Retail Federation.

Despite the criticism, the settlement submitted for approval on Friday was not substantively revised, according to Craig Wildfang, a lawyer representing merchants who favor the deal.

"We think the settlement is way over the bar for preliminary approval," Wildfang said.

Some merchants supporting the settlement, including a group of about 20 mostly large drug-store and grocery chains like Kroger Co, say it would allow them to communicate directly with customers about swipe fees.

The credit card companies also expressed their support Friday. Visa general counsel Josh Floum called the filing "an important milestone toward resolving the long-running litigation between the nation's retailers, financial institutions and payment networks." A spokesman for Mastercard said the company remained confident that the settlement will ultimately be approved.

The settlement will be evaluated at two stages: preliminary and then final approval. At both stages, Gleeson will hear from parties both endorsing and objecting to the settlement and will weigh whether it is "fair, reasonable and adequate."

A hearing on the settlement is expected to be scheduled for December or January. A lawyer for some of the objectors, Jeff Shinder, said his clients "look forward to laying out our deep concerns to the court."

If Gleeson rejects the settlement, the parties will have to resume settlement talks or press on toward trial.

Senate candidates differ on key issues | Alexandria Echo Press ...

Voters searching for differences between Minnesota Senate candidates in Districts 8 and 12 found plenty to mull over Monday night.

The office seekers clashed over the environment, renewable energy, the state budget, health care reform, the effectiveness of the last legislative session and more.

The exchanges took place at a legislative candidate forum at the Alexandria Technical and Community College that was sponsored by the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission and the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.

About 110 people attended the forum, including the candidates: Republican Bill Ingebrigtsen of Alexandria and DFLer Dan Skogen of Hewitt in District 8, and Republican Torrey Westrom of Elbow Lake and DFLer John Schultz of Correll in District 12.

Here?s a summary of what happened:

INTRODUCTIONS

Ingebrigtsen: He outlined his background as a former Douglas County sheriff who grew up in Alexandria. In his six years in the Senate, he served four years as a member of the minority party before voters gave Republicans control of the Senate two years ago. He serves on several Senate committees, including those dealing with the environment, judiciary, public safety, finance and ethics.

Skogen: A lifelong resident of Otter Tail County, he grew up in the Phelps Mill area and had a non-political background, 33 years in the radio industry in Wadena, when he decided to run for the Senate in 2006. He defeated a 20-year incumbent and served one term before he was voted out of office in 2010.

Schultz: Born in Wisconsin, he had extensive experience in the commercial banking industry before he had a ?mental seizure? and decided to venture into farming in Big Stone County. He said he decided to seek office to help a broken legislative system work again.

Westrom: He grew up on a dairy farm, obtained a law degree and runs a small business with his wife in Elbow Lake. He was elected to the Minnesota House in 1996 and recently served as chair of civil law and energy committees.

JOB GROWTH

Ingebrigtsen: He worked with the Dayton administration to cut red tape for businesses. He supported a bipartisan bill to help businesses move more quickly through the environmental permitting process, which he said has made it more attractive for businesses to move to Minnesota, adding thousands of jobs.

Skogen: Minnesota businesses need an educated workforce yet the Legislature has disinvested in higher education, cutting funding back to 2001 levels. Alexandria has nearly 100 job openings for highly-skilled workers. The ATCC could fill those jobs if it had the funding to make the training more affordable. The Legislature should support the Minnesota Investment Fund, which provides low-interest and forgivable loans to businesses that provide new jobs.

Schultz: The key to job growth is putting more dollars into the hands of consumers and increasing the bonding bill. Lower taxes do not impact businesses in a positive way. The state and nation also need to address repaying their debt.

Westrom: There is no ?silver bullet? that can suddenly create new jobs but he was open to hearing ideas. He mentioned one from the Minnesota Telephone Association: Cities that meet criteria for having high-speed, broadband Internet capabilities would be designated as Internet friendly on their city signs, similar to the Minnesota Star City program.

ENDING

PARTISAN GRIDLOCK

Ingebrigtsen: He learned the importance of working with the other political party when his party was in the minority for four years. He worked with DFL Governor Dayton in cutting red tape for businesses and also with legislation aimed at aquatic invasive species. There are some things Ingebrigtsen will not give in to, such as higher taxes and government growth. He wasn?t sent to the Legislature to get along 100 percent of the time with other senators.

Skogen: He served four years on a Senate conference committee where legislators would sit down and work out differences in their bills. He also worked on a bipartisan bonding bill that got things done, such as building a waste-to-energy plant in Perham.

Schultz: His 15 years as a personal financial advisor taught him the value of listening to what others want done. He said he?s a better listener than a talker. When he does talk, he said he does so straight-forwardly and with honesty. He said he also understands the importance of compromise and getting things done.

Westrom: He would work with both sides of the political aisle if it was an idea worth pursuing. He?s taken part in the cajoling that goes on at the caucus level over bonding, taxes and education. His constituents don?t want him to ?roll over? just to reach an agreement.

ADRESSING THE

BUDGET SHORTFALL

Ingebrigtsen: He supports broad-based tax relief for businesses, which in turn would create jobs, boost spending and produce more revenue for the state. He said that the Legislature was faced with a horrible $6 billion deficit two years ago but under Republican leadership, it made the tough decisions to turn the deficit into a surplus without raising taxes. He said he also supports more privatization of government functions.

Skogen: The Legislature, by not paying back education shifts and cutting reimbursements to nursing homes, is ?walking toward another cliff.? He added that Minnesota is not a bad place to do business, noting recent expansions such as 3M in St. Paul and the Geringhoff farm machinery plant in St. Cloud. The Legislature should work at closing corporate tax loopholes and have circuit breakers that click on when the state needs more revenue.

Schultz: The additional money the state was projected to take in through additional sales and building permit revenue is already spent and the state will face another big deficit in February. He supports equalizing tax returns for individuals, making sure large corporations are paying their fair share of taxes, and streamlining government spending and government jobs. He added that the Legislature has been ?digging this hole? for 12 years and it will take more than one legislative session to solve it.

Westrom: The state has gotten into financial trouble in the past when the pressure to spend is too great. The state has to live within its means, continue to find ways to reform government and rein in government growth.

WHICH JOBS

PROGRAMS

DESERVE SUPPORT?

This was an area where the candidates shared common ground. They all saw benefits with JOBZ and other economic development tools such as tax increment financing (TIF) and the Angel Investor Tax Credit program, although they did point out some flaws, such as lack of oversight and burdensome red tape.

Schultz noted that any government program is subject to abuse from the capitalist sector. He said the state should address the ?screaming need? for infrastructure repairs that could help businesses.

ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY

MANDATES

Ingebrigtsen: He voted against the 2007 mandate to have utility companies get at least 25 percent of their power from solar, wind and burned waste by 2025. He thinks the requirement was too much and doesn?t support any more regulations. ?I don?t stand in the way of good, alternative energy,? Ingebrigtsen said, ?but how much will we have to pay for that?? The 2025 mandate is only ?sending clean air to Wisconsin.? He supported lifting the ban on nuclear energy, which he said is the cleanest fuel there is, but the governor vetoed it.

Skogen: He voted for the renewable energy standards in 2007. ?If it sends clean air to Wisconsin, I see nothing wrong with that,? he said. Skogen, who served 10 years on the Todd-Wadena County Electric Board, said that although the standards caused ?high anxiety? among the utilities, they were not going to change unless they were told to. Alternative energy has created more jobs and the 2025 requirements should be allowed to play out. It?s vital for consumers to reduce their energy consumption.

Schultz: He has concerns about nuclear waste storage. Global warming must be addressed by pursuing renewable energy even if it drives up electrical rates in the future. ?I want better, cleaner energy,? he said. ?We only have one planet.?

Westrom: He doesn?t believe that humans caused global warming. He said the Earth has been warming for eons. Big strides have been made in cleaning up air, water and smog, and tighter regulations could impede people?s ability to invent things. He said he supported the 2007 25 percent requirement because he wanted to do ?10 percent right rather than 25 percent wrong.? He said that 25 percent requirement should be scaled back. He also supports hydro-energy.

HEALTH CARE

FOR THE ELDERLY

Skogen: The state needs to make reimbursements to nursing homes a priority. Facilities have not had a cost of living increase in five years. Assisted living facilities and home health care saves the state millions of dollars and this type of care should be encouraged. It?s time to end equalization rates in nursing homes.

Ingebrigtsen: Nursing homes should have been reimbursed six years ago when the DFL-controlled Legislature had a $2 billion surplus. The federal government has spent $50 billion on green job incentives and suggested that half of that money should have been spent on taking care of the elderly. He agreed with Skogen on ending nursing home equalization rates but Governor Dayton vetoed it.

Schultz: Long-term care is especially important in District 12 because it has so many senior citizens. The state is not doing enough to take care of the elderly. The Legislature needs to make health care for seniors a priority.

Westrom: It?s important for seniors to maintain their independent living in their own homes as long as possible. He fought against over-regulating assisted living facilities and said it was time to ?super-charge? the tax credits for seniors to obtain long-term care insurance.

EDUCATION FUNDING

Ingebrigtsen: K-12 funding has been a political football. To help balance the budget, the state shifts money from the schools. The Legislature repaid about half of the $725 million it shifted and voted to pay back the rest but Governor Dayton vetoed the bill. The disparities in per-pupil funding make no sense. Alexandria and Fergus Falls should receive the same amount as the metro areas.

Skogen: The Legislature needs to get serious about putting together a plan for education funding. Schools are being forced to constantly levy because they aren?t receiving enough funding through the state, such as technology upgrades. The state needs to press the federal government into paying its share of special education funding, which is costing Minnesota millions of dollars every year.

Schultz: The state should return to how it was handling education funding before it was changed in 2001, because the current method isn?t working. He?s also concerned about the ?giant sucking sound? that can be heard in Minnesota every June when graduates flee to other states, taking their intellectual power with them.

Westrom: The state needs to equalize the per-pupil rates to provide more fair funding for rural school districts. When the state puts more money into education, taxes go up. Now, with less funding from the state, property taxes are going up at the local level.

TEACHER

EVALUATIONS

Ingebrigtsten: Graduation rates in Douglas and Pope counties lag behind neighboring counties, which is something to pay attention to. Evaluations make sense. They?re done in the private sector. He thinks they could level the playing field.

Skogen: He had some concerns about evaluations, even though he?s heard most teachers are not opposed to the idea. Some teachers are brilliant with special needs students but they would be harder to evaluate. He said the state should be considering all the students and trying to get the most out of every one of them.

Schultz: He posed some questions: If Johnny can run faster, does that mean his coach is better? If Suzy gets higher test scores, does that mean her teacher is better? He said it was silly to try to reduce things that can?t be measured. There are ways to evaluate teaching success but assigning a numerical score isn?t the answer.

Westrom: He supports education reforms as long as local school boards and parents have a say in it. Teacher evaluations should also be done at the local level.

OBAMACARE?S

IMPACT IN MN

Ingebrigtsen: Obamacare, passed at the federal level, does not address increasing costs of health care and will result in higher taxes. Minnesota takes care of people who need health care. He supports allowing people to obtain health insurance through the free market system. Abuse of the system should be eliminated, such as people going to the emergency room to obtain routine care.

Skogen: He?s glad a president finally pulled the trigger on trying to give everyone health insurance. It may not drive down costs but it will at least provide people with insurance. Obamacare should move forward as long as there is local control.

Schultz: Obamacare is a start, providing insurance to 50 million more people. Everyone in the U.S. should have health care.

Westrom: Obamacare was wrongly declared constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. Government health care plans in other countries, such as Canada, are flawed. In Canada, people with the common cold go to the emergency room while others are waiting eight hours or more to see a doctor. Minnesota?s system should be reformed to allow people to get insurance from the private sector.

ENERGY

AND ?CLEAN COAL?

Ingebrigtsten: Coal isn?t clean but the country is doing a better job in making it cleaner. The state?s ban on nuclear power plants should not be a partisan issue and should be lifted. Natural gas is also a good alternative.

Skogen: Coal is not clean and saying it is clean is like saying there is no global warming. Technology is making coal cleaner but mining techniques are once again getting ahead of the technology. Renewable energy can create good jobs.

Schultz: Burning coal is harmful to the environment by producing carbon dioxide. Right now, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is at historic high levels. You can take some of the impurities out of coal but not the carbon dioxide.

Westrom: Technology has led to cleaner coal and that should be explored more. He?s heard of a method that turns coal into a gas and it?s then burned. Renewable energy should stay in the state and keep energy costs at reasonable levels.

WHAT ARE YOUR

TOP TWO

CORE VALUES?

Ingebrigtsen: Moral values and transparency by not hiding anything from constituents. He?s dedicated his whole life to public service and gets back to people when they contact him.

Skogen: He?s a man of faith who is honest and humble. ?I say what I mean and I mean what I say,? he said. He?s compassionate ?to a fault,? and has been blessed with good health, healthy children and a strong marriage.

Westrom: Rural, family values, small-town roots, independence and a can-do attitude. He also knows how to listen. ?My eyes aren?t so good,? said Westrom, who lost his eyesight in a car accident in 1987. ?But my ears are.?

Schultz: Quoting Garrison Keillor, Schultz said he was strong and above average. He mentioned his farming background and his passion of taking care of the environment. He gives straight answers. He quoted what someone once said about him: ?If you don?t want to know what Schultz thinks, don?t ask him.?

CLOSING REMARKS

Ingebrigtsen: He wants to be part of the solution to the state?s problems. He said that the Legislature was able to turn a $6 billion deficit into a $2 billion surplus without raising taxes. Government has been on auto-pilot for too long.

Skogen: Led by Republicans for the last two years, the Legislature has been managing from one crisis to another and it?s time to stop. In the last two years, there has been a 21-day government shutdown; a $300 million increase in property taxes; cuts to local government aid; and the use of public tax dollars to defend the indiscretions of colleagues. ?This election is not about me,? he said. ?It?s about you.?

Schultz: As a ?recovering farmer? in Big Stone, he has a ?universe of experience in the private sector? that his opponent doesn?t have. He understands that global warming is here. The economy is driven by agriculture and small business. The state needs to balance its budget through fair taxation and government efficiency.

Westrom: The state has had some ups and downs but to dig out of a hole, you shouldn?t just raise taxes. You should make government work better. ?The government that works best is closest to the people,? he said. Online learning can help cut costs in public education and should be embraced.

Come, Look Inside Our Kitchen Cabinets! ? Simple Organized Living

I know most of you are just dying to see pictures of the finished kitchen ? but unfortunately we?re still waiting for the butcher block island counter to be installed, as well as a few other odds and ends.

And since I really don?t want to show ?after? pictures until the kitchen is totally finished, I?m just going to continue sharing bits and?pieces?of our newly renovated kitchen? sorry.

In case you missed it, I shared the details of our new kitchen appliances?last week, and?I let you look through all our kitchen drawers two weeks ago.

This week, I?m giving you a tour of our kitchen cabinets!

.

But first, I want to quickly share my friend Katie?s newly organized kitchen with you. She blogs over at Kitchen Stewardship and during the month of October, she?s running a series call ?Organizing in October?.

Last week, Nora and I went to visit Katie and her kiddos and I gave her a few tips and pointers. Then she got to work and did some crazy kitchen organizing. If you want to be inspired by another real-life kitchen? go check our her blog!

OK, back to our kitchen?

To put things in?perspective, here is an aerial view of our kitchen so you can see how things fit together.

I?ll start with the cabinets above the refrigerator.

.

These cabinets are 24? deep so they almost come to the front of the refrigerator. They definitely are not the most easily accessible cabinets in our kitchen, so I?m using the right side of this?cabinet?for items I don?t use everyday {travel cake carrier, travel 9?x13? carrier, etc.} Then I?m using the left side to vertically stack cookie sheets, muffin tins, cutting boards, and pizza pans.

I do keep the cutting board I use all the time out on the counter, but the rest of the items are easy enough for me to reach when needed.

The upper cabinets on each side of the sink.

.

The cabinet to the right of the sink has ALL our glasses and mugs :)

The cabinet to the left of the sink has?kitchen towels and washcloths on the bottom 2 shelves, food for Nora on the next shelf, and the top shelf is empty.

I?m thinking the top shelf will eventually be used for baby bottles whenever we have our next baby (no rush though? I like having empty shelves!)

Cabinets below the sink.

.

This is a pretty boring cabinet as we don?t have a lot of extra space under there. With our extra deep sink, plumbing pipes, and garbage disposal, we basically only have room for our plastic dishpan which contains our kitchen cleaning supplies.

Oh, and notice how nicely lit this cabinet is ? thanks to my in-cabinet lights :)

Lower cabinet to the left of the sink.

.

This cabinet is equally boring because it just holds our garbage can, extra trash bags, a dust pan, and hand broom.

Upper corner cabinet.

.

I?m so excited about this cabinet ? because it has 3 built-in Lazy-Susans so I can easily reach everything ? even the stuff on the top ?shelf?.

To be perfectly honest, the Lazy-Susans actually end up wasting quite a bit of space since there?s a big pole running through the middle, and the back corners are empty. However, the space I do have is SO much easier to access, thanks to the spinning shelves.

I keep many of my baking supplies in this cabinet, and just love how easy it is to find whatever I need without having to dig to the very back of a super deep cabinet. Oh, and if you?re wondering what those papers are on the door ? they are different baking ?cheat sheets? ? like how to substitute ingredients, measurement conversions, etc. I refer to them ALL the time.

Lower corner cabinet.

.

Since we have a Lazy-Susan in the corner of our upper cabinets, it only makes sense to have one for our lower cabinets as well. Our Lazy-Susan is only about 1/2 full right now and mostly just contains food ? flour, sugar, bulk baking supplies, oils, vinegar, pasta, rice, etc.

There?s a chance I might change this? but for now it?s working just fine.

Cabinets above the stove.

.

Often times, a microwave would go above the stove ? but for some reason, I really don?t like the microwave above the stove (and thankfully, Dave doesn?t care where it goes!)

Because we don?t have our microwave above the stove, ?we have room for taller cabinets ? as well as a lot more space for cooking.

I?m taking advantage of the extra space up there and storing some of our larger stock pots, our salad spinner (which I don?t use that often) and tall juice?pitchers.

Upper cabinets on each side of the stove.

.

These cabinet are quite narrow ? but due to the layout of our kitchen, we really didn?t have any way around that. Plus, as you can see by the pictures below, we really don?t NEED this space!

The cabinet to the right of the stove has salt, pepper, and butter on the bottom? and the rest of the cabinet is completely empty. I?m sure I?ll fill it with something at some point.

The cabinet to the left of the stove has gum and candy on the bottom shelf, drink mixes (Crystal Light, Country Time, Hot Chocolate, etc) on the next shelf and then a few extra water bottles on the top shelf.

Lower cabinet to the left of the stove.

.

This is another custom cabinet that I?m pretty excited about. It?s a pull-out cabinet that works perfectly for storing small jars of spices, herbs, seasonings, Jello, pudding, salt, pepper, etc.

And yes, Nora loves playing in this cabinet :)

?

OK, so that?s basically the ?kitchen? side of things. But we still have a lot more cabinets left to look through!

If you look at the birds-eye image again, you?ll see that we have a large ?pantry/storage? area that?s almost all floor-to-ceiling cabinets.

Before we renovated our kitchen, there was absolutely NOTHING in this corner except our built-in oven. Talk about wasted space!!

Because of some heating ducts and our chimney, the walls are a little weird in that corner, but thankfully, we were able to work around the walls and create a huge amount of storage extra space in our our new kitchen.

Here?s a front ?before & after? view of that same corner so you can see what I?m talking about :)

I?ll start with the upper cabinets above the counter.

.

Due to a mess-up with our pantry cabinet shelves, we ended up with a couple extra shelves for this cabinet ? and I?m putting them ALL to good use!

I?m using this cabinet to store all my cake/brownie pans, bread pans, casserole dishes, pie plates, and other bakeware.

In our old kitchen, I had everything stacked or ?nested? so it was really difficult to access. But by putting these shelves really close together, I?m able to easily accomodate all my pans without having to stack them.

And if you?re wondering how I access the pans at the top ? we have a small step stool :)

Upper ?corner? cabinet.

.

Due to the crazy walls that I was telling you about earlier, this corner cabinet is less than ideal ? but it?s significantly better than what was there, so I?m not complaining.

We use this cabinet to store most of our small appliances {immersion?blender, waffle maker, George Foreman, food processor, steamer, coffee grinder, etc.) I also put some of my serving platters on the top shelf (which was completely empty)

We still have tons of extra space in this cabinet, but since it?s not the most?convenient storage, I figured empty space is OK.

Appliance garage.

.

Well, it?s not a true appliance garage, but that?s because I wanted it to look exactly the same as our other cabinet doors. And instead of small appliances, we?re storing our microwave and coffe maker behind those doors.

Remember, I said that I didn?t like microwaves above the stove? Well, this is where our microwave is ? hidden behind closed doors until we need to use it.

Lower cabinets.

.

These lower cabinets are perfect for all my pots and pans ? especially since I did such a good job of paring them down to just the basics that I use every week.

The cabinet on the left has a ?blind corner? (because of those crazy walls again) so I?m storing my Christmas dishes, slow cookers, and roasting pans back there. They are still readily available and easily accessible whenever I need them, but not ?wasting? prime cabinet space.

Pantry cabinet.

.

This is the last cabinet ? I promise!

Obviously this floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet offers a HUGE amount of storage ? for food, small appliances, lunch boxes, coolers? and even a TV (we installed a couple electrical outlets and a cable outlet.)

We don?t even come close to using all the space (and I?m not convinced the TV will stay either); however, I?m thrilled to have these massive cabinets for storing snacks, baked goods, bread, and other lunch-packing supplies in close proximity to our kitchen island.

?

OK, so that?s it? the full tour of all our kitchen cabinets.

And I promise I did not do anything special to prepare for these photos. I didn?t pull things out or spend hours?rearranging?everything so it looked perfect ? although I did spend hours planning out the kitchen cabinet design (earlier this summer) so it would accomodate all my kitchen stuff!

I?m a huge believer that an organized and well-planned kitchen saves TONS of time ? and these days, I?m all about saving time in the kitchen :)

Hopefully my organized cabinets (and drawers) will help to maximize my time in the kitchen for many years to come!
