Here are 4 misconceptions about exercise and fitness that seem to persist. 1. Weight is the best measure of your fitness. Actually, if anything, I tell my patients who are trying to lose weight not to look at the scale at all. Body shape, especially waist size, is a better barometer and one better still is your stamina. If it?s easier to walk up that hill than it was before then you know you?re in better shape. 2. The calorie counter on the cardio machine is accurate. Without knowing your sex, age, weight, or body fat composition the machine cannot give you an accurate reckoning of calories burned. 3. Drinking a protein shake after a work out will help you recover faster. Substances like ?protein? are only part of the picture when it comes to your overall health. I?m a big proponent of eating real food and thinking about nutrition in terms of food and not just the individual vitamins, minerals and proteins. Think about a post work out meal in terms of healthy foods like nuts, lean meats, yogurt, oatmeal, fresh fruits and vegetables and water. Are bodies are adapted to eating whats in nature, not what?s in packages. And 4. I want to have flat abs so it?s best to do crunches. No one can see a six-pack under layers of fat. The best way to get flat abs is to start by eating a healthy diet and reducing your overall calorie intake. Then start an exercise program that uses your whole body. The fat will reduce and those flat abs will shine through.
