Palestinian man shot by Israeli troops near Gaza border

Israeli Defense Forces fired on Palestinians near the Gaza border on Friday, killing one.

Palestinian medical officials told Agence France Presse that the man who died was a fisherman named Fahmi Abu Rayash. His brother was also wounded, and they were brought into Beit Lahiya hospital late on Friday morning.

Hamas officials claimed that 22-year-old Rayash was killed while fishing on the beach in the Gaza Strip, Reuters reported.

There were conflicting claims from the Israeli and Palestinian sides, with a spokesman for the IDF saying they were not aware of an incident involving soldiers firing upon a fisherman.

Reuters noted, "Israeli army patrols deem the Gaza border area off limits because militants try to attack them by planting explosive devices or shooting at them."

The IDF troops said they fired on the suspects' legs as they allegedly approached the Gaza - Israel border on Friday.

An IDF spokesman said, "We initiated the stop-suspect-procedure, calling out for them to stop. Verbal warnings were ignored," according to The Jerusalem Post.

In a separate incident, an Israeli Navy boat fired shots near a Palestinian boat that strayed into sea waters that are off limits, said an IDF spokesman.

AFP noted that Israel imposes a strict maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Orioles?pull into tie with Yanks

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles are tied atop the AL East with the New York Yankees with four games left, a scenario that might cause a team unaccustomed to being in a pennant race to stumble under pressure.

Not these guys.

After Baltimore beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 Saturday night to earn a share of first place, Orioles first baseman Mark Reynolds described the mood of the team as "a quiet confidence."

"Calmness," Reynolds said. "We're playing with house money. We're not supposed to be here. We're just a bunch of kids having fun. We go out every night believing we're going to win the game, no matter what the situation and no matter who we're facing. It's just fun to be a part of."

Chris Davis hit his 30th home run and rookie Manny Machado lined a go-ahead shot in the seventh inning for the Orioles. After finishing in the division cellar in each of the previous four seasons, Baltimore (91-67) is tied with a team very much accustomed to finishing in first place.

The Yankees lost to Toronto before this game started, so the Orioles knew they would earn a share of the lead with a win. Baltimore went ahead 3-0 in the fourth, then let Boston pull even before Machado homered, a liner into the second row of the left-field seats off Felix Doubront (11-10).

Machado has been a major leaguer for all of 47 games after being summoned from Double-A Bowie on Aug. 9.

"I'm just trying to play the game," he said. "Obviously, it's bigger than any other games I've played before. I'm just going to try and go out there and give everything I can to help this team win."

It was another tight victory for the Orioles, their trademark in this unimaginable season. Baltimore is 28-9 in one-run games and 72-0 when leading after seven innings.

"It's an honor to sit there and watch it and marvel at what these guys can do, especially when certain things start snowballing," manager Buck Showalter said. "And you create your karma. These guys have done a good job of doing that, and they're expecting good things to happen."

Tommy Hunter (7-8) pitched two innings, Brian Matusz and Darren O'Day shared the eighth and Jim Johnson got three outs for his 49th save.

A sellout crowd of 46,311, a majority of them clad in Oriole orange, brought Camden Yards back to a time when the home team was a force in the AL East and the ballpark was packed on a nightly basis.

The fans got to cheer a Baltimore great before the first pitch, too. A statue of Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson was unveiled during a ceremony in the flag court beyond the center-field wall.

The Orioles' goal is to capture the division, but if they win two more games they are at least assured of their first trip to the playoffs since 1997 - their last winning season before this year. Baltimore now is 41-27 in the division and New York is 37-31, so if Baltimore wins one more game, it will have home-field advantage if there's a playoff to decide the AL East title.

"The pressure's on both of us," Reynolds said. "Four games left, dead heat. I guess there's a possibility of two playoff games. It's what we play for, and it's fun."

In addition to hitting two homers and limiting Boston to five hits, Baltimore also played well defensively. Machado, the third baseman, ranged far to his right in the fourth inning to start a double play, and Reynolds tumbled over the tarp roll and got wedged behind it after catching a foul pop. Endy Chavez, who entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth, made a sparking diving catch of a sinking liner to right field.

"They just keeping doing what they have to do," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said of the Orioles. "Buck knows what he's doing. He puts in a defensive replacement and he makes a diving catch. They've done a great job with that young third baseman. He beat us tonight. He played excellent defense all year."

Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered for the Red Sox, who fell into last place with their 15th loss in 21 games. Boston has not finished in the cellar since 1992.

Doubront allowed four runs, three earned, and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out 10, walked one and hit a batter.

Red Sox leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury went 1 for 4 after being sidelined since Sept. 20 with an unspecified injury. Ellsbury has only four homers and 26 RBIs after finishing second in AL MVP voting last season.

"I didn't see him play that way this year," Valentine said before the game. "He did not quite hit his stride this year."

Orioles rookie Steve Johnson took a three-hitter and a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning but was lifted after giving up a single and a walk. Hunter got Dustin Pedroia to hit a force at second, but a run came home when Cody Ross hit a sacrifice fly to right field that Davis dropped after Adam Jones drifted over from center and called for the ball. Hunter avoided further damage by getting Mauro Gomez to bounce into a double play.

Baltimore went up 1-0 in the second when Machado singled in a run after Doubront hit Davis with a pitch and Reynolds reached on a slow roller to third.

In the fourth, after Jones reached on a throwing error by shortstop Mike Aviles, Davis drove a 1-0 pitch far over the right-field wall for a 3-0 lead.

Saltalamacchia hit his 25th homer in the fifth after Gomez drew a leadoff walk.

NOTES: The Robinson statue stands alongside the team's five other Hall of Fame members, all of whom were in attendance: Earl Weaver, Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken Jr. ... Joe Saunders will pitch for the Orioles in the series finale Sunday. Zach Stewart will pitch for Boston. ... Baltimore claimed OF Steve Pearce off waivers from the Yankees. He will join the team in Tampa Bay on Monday. ... Boston has lost 17 of 24 to Baltimore since September 2011.

Still falling off the M&A cliff - The Term Sheet: Fortune's deals blog ...

FORTUNE --Are we experiencing a new normal for mergers and acquisitions?

Six months ago, we heard that low Q1 M&A activity was just a holiday hangover. Three months ago, we heard that low Q2 M&A activity was an anomaly -- and that the pipeline was stuffed with transactions that hadn't quite been able to cross the finish line. But as the third quarter now comes to a close, the downward trend shows no sign of abating.

Preliminary data from Thomson Reuters shows an 18.3% decline in global M&A activity, when comparing Q3 2012 to Q3 2011. Year-to-date volume is down a whopping 38%, including nearly 45% in the U.S.

In fact, the numbers are rough in virtually every related data set. Year-to-date European M&A is at a 10-year low, and quarter-over-quarter volume fell approximately 42%. U.S. activity is at a nine-year low, while Asia is reporting its weakest mark since 2005.

The only potential bright-spot is for private equity-backed deals, which climbed 16% in Q3 from the prior quarter. But even there the larger picture is cloudy, with year-to-date activity down 10 percent.

Yes, 2012 still has another quarter to turn things around. And deal pros insist that they are as busy as they've ever been, with rising public equities prices making corporations more willing to buy and sell. Hope springs eternal... Or, if not eternal, at least it springs for another three months.

Own Ward, Bay View Gallery Night 2012 ? Local Trolley

Cramming activities into the last clement days of the year isn?t too difficult in Milwaukee and no neighborhood rises to the occasion quite like Bay View. There?s the South Shore Farmers Market and The Frolics. There was Pabst Fest and Bay View Bash, Art Beat, that other crap I?m missing, and now Bay View Gallery Night, which kicks off tomorrow night. Yes, a Gallery Night so cool it happens a full month before the rest of the City?s.

On the serrated butter knife?s edge of this madness, Made in Milwaukee and Alchemist Theatre safely press their pointy little teeth into Milwaukee?s penchant for creative to-do?s du jour. Bay View?s abundance of venues and pop-up cultural dioramas basically will allow you to just walk down KK without a plan. But here are a few places and artists to see.

Alchemist Theatre and Bay View Lounge

They co-sponsor the night and will have photography of Shane Gardner on the walls and music of Todd Richards and the Surround Sound Experiment in the ether. What?s coolest about this stop? The Alchemist Theatre has a chic/cheeky dive concept lounge rarely open when no show is on-stage.

If you?re not sure about theatre, you can at least absorb one of the best social atmospheres Milwaukee has to offer without committing a couple hours to stage entertainment. If you like it enough, you can vamp back in for the Alchemist?s upcoming Hollowed Eve themed freak-you-out live theatrical production The Alchemist Eye.

Amanda Iglinski at the Hide House

Usually all sorts of craziness goes on at the Hide House like church services and improvised musical shows. Most of that will probably still be going on tomorrow night and among others Amanda Iglinski?s works will perch on the Hide House?s interior vertical planes as a part of the first floor display. She?s a tremendous pop artist with intriguing vision that melds social commentary to the craft of picking images, motifs and colors to blend.

The Hide House will also have exhibits and B-Boy performances from the TRUE Skool camp, Bay View Arts Guild, Sara Risley, music, art studio open houses and egg rolls from Mamma?s Eggrolls.

Gao Gallery

Resident artist Jenie Gao will open her space to feature artwork of her contemporaries Steph Davies, Laura Macias Barrera, Zina Mussman, Rachel Quirk and live music.

Gao Gallery occasionally offers instructional art workshops. Stop by during Bay View Gallery Night and you?ll be able to screenprint a ready made design on one of your own garments or a T that you can purchase there. Jenie Gao?s star as a fine art purveyor is in full bloom and something to gaze upon for seeing what it looks like to go beyond just having talent in a particular medium.

Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing

Ink?s abound in this town, why stop now? I see calf tats are in. Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing will wet their needles publicly for the grand ole? first time, opening on BVGN?s expressive ocean swell. The Mil can?t get enough ink, how can you blame us, most of us live where our bodies are at the moment anyway.

The Rest Are The Best Anyway

If I were to drop a few more names for thirst quenching pit stops let?s jus throw Studio Lounge, Black Bird Bar, Boon and Crockett, Hector?s and Club Giribaldi out there arbitrarily. Bay View Gallery Night?s website has the full listing happenings complete with proper addresses and other vital information. I also hear that the new super brilliant Alterra will have a parking lot extavaganza of sorts to top it all with a mango.

New fish species offers literal take on 'hooking up'

Friday, September 28, 2012

Fishing hooks aren't the only hooks found in east-central Mexican waters.

A new species of freshwater fish described by a North Carolina State University researcher has several interesting ? and perhaps cringe-inducing ? characteristics, including a series of four hooks on the male genitalia.

Females of the new species ? the llanos mosquitofish, or Gambusia quadruncus ? also have distinguishing characteristics, including a colorful anal spot.

A paper describing the new species, which lives in a diversity hotspot and seemingly branched off from its closest relative more than one million years ago, appears in the Journal of Fish Biology.

Dr. Brian Langerhans, assistant professor of biology at NC State and the lead author of the paper, says that these interesting characteristics may play important roles in mating control and success.

While more research is needed, Langerhans says that four-hooked genitalia on males can serve a purpose when females attempt to block or restrict mating attempts.

"Typically, reproduction is more costly in females, so females favor ways of reducing mating with 'lower quality' males," Langerhans says, "but reproduction is cheap in males and so selection favors ways of mating with as many females as possible. In Gambusia, some females, including G. quadruncus, have evolved modifications that appear to function as a blocking device ? essentially a big ball of tissue blocking most of the genital pore ? restricting entry of the male's gonopodial tip. Thus, the female would have to behaviorally allow the male to mate or the male would have to evolve a counter response to avoid this problem."

The four-hooked genitalia could be that counter-response, Langerhans says.

"Having four hooks on the gonopodium may provide a means of overcoming female resistance, latching on to the gonopore and transferring sperm in a manner that facilitates effective sperm transfer. Or it may serve to stimulate the female in a manner that causes responses in the female that facilitate effective sperm transfer," Langerhans says.

Somewhat similarly, the colorful anal spot on females appears to serve as a signal that only certain males are desired for mating.

"The differing, species-specific female anal spots appear to influence male mating behavior by signaling the location of the gonopore to the male, sometimes indicating the reproductive status of the female, and distinguishing fish of their own species from fish of other species to reduce costly cross-breeding, which can result in fish with reduced fitness," Langerhans says. "So it may be that G. quadruncus evolved different anal spots to help reduce interspecies matings and possible formation of hybrids."

Breakthrough in kitchen furniture production: Biocomposites challenge chipboard

Biocomposites challenge chipboard as furniture material. Researchers at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have developed a kitchen furniture framework material from plastic polymers reinforced with natural fibre. The new material reduces raw materials consumption by 25 per cent and the carbon footprint of production by 35 per cent.

"The frames are lighter by nearly a third because they contain more air," says VTT's Research Professor Ali Harlin. "Wastage during production is also reduced. This is a generational shift that revolutionizes both manufacturing techniques and design."

According to Harlin, the framework for the kitchen of the future will be compression moulded or extruded - familiar methods in the plastics industry. The result is a component of exact dimensions, which does not need to be cut or drilled after production. Even the screw-holes are there when the component comes off the production line.

The natural fibre reinforcement in biocomposites can be sawdust, pulp, flax, hemp or peat. The new material is significantly stronger than chipboard and has excellent moisture resistance.

VTT has developed this new material in cooperation with the Finnish kitchen fitments maker Puustelli. Professor Harlin believes that furniture companies will be attracted to the new production technique, because it will enable them to save on production and transport costs. The investments in new machinery will pay themselves back in a few years according to Harlin.

Industrial designer Juhani Salovaara, designer of the Puustelli composite kitchen, says that the starting point for the design was to achieve the smallest environmental impact and the largest degree of domestic origin possible.

"People have already heard of local food. We wanted to create the local kitchen."

The composites used in Puustelli kitchens are manufactured by the Finnish forest industry enterprise UPM. According to Salovaara, the degree of domestic origin of biocomposite furniture frames is in the region of 90 per cent. The material's breaking strength and moisture resistance are top class. It is also significant for the end user that the furniture's formaldehyde discharge is clearly diminished.

Professor Ali Harlin thinks it likely that the innovation will also be of interest outside Finland. Some European furniture makers have tried composites, but their production techniques are based on traditional cutting.

According to Harlin, VTT will continue developing biocomposites and charting new applications for them.

"One point of interest lies in whether biocomposites could be used in cars and other vehicles. In that field, weight is money even more than in furniture."

Anti-Muslim filmmaker's probation case creeps

CERRITOS, Calif. (AP) ? The federal probation violation investigation targeting the man behind the anti-Muslim video inflaming the Middle East is proceeding slowly and privately, reflecting the explosiveness of the case.

Federal officials have said nothing publicly about the case, and neither has Nakoula Basseley Nakoula's attorney. Nakoula has put his home up for sale and gone into hiding since violence erupted over the 14-minute YouTube trailer for "Innocence of Muslims," a crudely made film that portrays the Muhammad as a religious fraud, womanizer and pedophile.

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and dozens have died in violent protests linked to the movie. A Pakistani cabinet minister on Monday offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills Nakoula.

Meantime, First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film even while condemning its content. President Barack Obama echoed those sentiments Tuesday in a speech at the United Nations.

"We understand why people take offense to this video because millions of our citizens are among them. I know there are some who ask, 'Why don't we just ban such a video?'" he said. "The answer is enshrined in our laws. Our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech."

Against that backdrop, federal officials are looking into whether Nakoula, 55, violated probation for a 2010 check fraud conviction by uploading the trailer to YouTube. Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

If he's found in violation, he could be returned to prison. If not, he'll remain free. Either way, federal officials will face criticism, either from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled or from those who believe he should have been punished for inciting violence with the video.

"This case breaks the mold," said Mark Werksman, a defense attorney in Los Angeles and a former federal prosecutor. "If the video hadn't gone viral, and caused the Arabic world to blow up, who would care if this guy is using YouTube? It's all about politics with this guy."

Because of the international complexity, probation officials handling the case are taking plenty of time to make a decision and likely are getting input from throughout the federal government, said Lawrence Rosenthal, a professor at Chapman University's School of Law in Orange.

"My best guess is decisions about this case are going to be made at very high levels," Rosenthal said, surmising federal prosecutors, Justice Department headquarters and even the State Department may be weighing in.

Steven Seiden, a defense attorney representing Nakoula in the probation matter, did not reply to questions by email Tuesday and has not replied to several written requests for an interview with him or his client. The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment.

In most federal cases, a probation officer who decides someone has committed a serious violation submits a confidential report to the sentencing judge, who then can pursue a probation revocation hearing ? a mini-trial of sorts ? where probation officials must prove the violation.

If the judge finds the individual in violation, the court can return the defendant to probation, send him to prison or impose additional terms of probation without prison time.

Normal cases can move very quickly ? sometimes taking days ? once a probation officer has prepared a report, Werksman said. In this instance, however, the political and diplomatic ramifications likely have officials scrutinizing every step.

Probation officials first must be able to prove there was a violation, and that could mean a lengthy investigation into whether Nakoula or someone else posted the video on YouTube, said Heidi Rummel, a former federal prosecutor and criminal law professor at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law.

In addition, the terms of Nakoula's supervised release indicate he was allowed to use computers with prior approval from his probation officer. It's possible he received approval to post the trailer for "Innocence of Muslims."

"Usually the probation officer will be most interested in preventing him from engaging in any kind of activity related to the original crime, so another factor would be what kind of permission did the probation officer give him?" she said. "Why would (the film) be of concern in a bank fraud case? That's a whole nother wrinkle."

If federal probation officials ? or those above them ? decide not to proceed against Nakoula, the public likely will never know what went into the decision or who was involved without a court proceeding, Rosenthal said.

If the case does go before a judge, Nakoula could argue he was singled out on a probation technicality for exercising his right to free speech, Rosenthal said.

Either way, the outcome to the investigation could take a long time and isn't as straightforward as it may seem, said Rummel, the former prosecutor.

The issues are unusual for the probation revocation context and the allegations may be difficult to prove," she said.

"It's not like they have a couple dirty drug tests and two weeks later they're in court."

USDA Blog ? Increasing Opportunities and Expanding Possibilities ...

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan (center, white jacket) buys produce at the Baltimore farmers market in Baltimore, MD., on July 8, 2012. The mid-Atlantic region saw double-digit growth in its listings in the National Farmers Market Directory. Maryland added 76 new market listings alone. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung.

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan (center, white jacket) buys produce at the Baltimore farmers market in Baltimore, MD. By supporting farmers markets and other businesses, Farmers Market Promotion Program funds have helped open new doors for farmers and ranchers all across the country.

Last Friday, I was honored to announce $9 million in new grants through USDA?s Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP). The program targets producers, cooperatives and organizations that market products directly to consumers ? just one of the many marketing approaches that make American agriculture so successful.

FMPP grants have helped open new doors for farmers and ranchers across the country, strengthened the connection between producers and their communities, and expanded consumer access to farm-fresh foods.

For example, this year?s awards include support for Earth Learning in Miami to expand Harvest Markets, a hub for local produce, meats, dairy and more. Funds will enable the group to expand a community farmers market, develop a new mobile market, and ensure that both markets accept electronic benefits like SNAP.? That means new business opportunities for farmers and ranchers in southern Florida and greater access to fresh foods for local consumers.

In Ohio, Flying HIGH will use FMPP funds to recruit and train young urban adults as farmers, showing them how to grow and sell produce at new farmers markets in Youngstown and throughout Mahoning County.? A combination of production and marketing education, technical support services, supplies and professional development will have significant impact on the long-term success of young farmers in the community.

I announced the newest round of FMPP awards during a trip to Cleveland, OH, a city that is reaping the benefit of its region?s diverse agricultural industry. At the Downtown Farmers Market in Cleveland?s Public Square, I met producers from the state?s rural areas who were boosting their bottom line through direct-to-consumer sales. Shoppers at the market relished the opportunity to learn more about where their food comes from. I saw value-added businesses making use of local produce to create delicious products. I spoke with one family who launched a successful pizza business at the market, topping their pies with whatever was fresh at the market that day.

With the help of Farmers Market Promotion Program funds, farmers markets and other organizations will strengthen the connection between farmers and their communities and increase access to fresh, healthy foods.

Our agricultural industry is strong because it is so diverse, and direct marketing opportunities are part of that diversity. FMPP is just one example of how USDA is supporting these opportunities for farmers and ranchers of all sizes. Through FMPP and other programs, we have helped build infrastructure, provide training, expand businesses and support farmers and ranchers as they work to meet consumer demand for local foods.

prudsys release 3.2.4: new RDE client allows for more intuitive and ...

The focus of the new prudsys RDE 3.2.4. release for the prudsys RDE client is to allow for an even faster and easier RDE configuration through clear design and new functionality. In addition to the user interface, the six other prudsys RDE modules were also updated, expanding their functionality.

prudsys release 3.2.4: new RDE client allows for more intuitive and user-friendly interface with prudsys RDE

The new release of the prudsys RDE 3.2.4 (in short, prudsys RDE) is both technically sophisticated yet agile and easy to use. In recent months, realtime analytics specialist prudsys has not only been working on improving the RDE module itself, but also on the user-friendly operation of the leading personalization solution for online retail.

The result: the new prudsys RDE release can now implement sophisticated and individualized personalization projects even more easily.

RDE Client with clear design and expanded functionality
The focus of the new prudsys RDE release 3.2.4 is the new designed user interface, and not only by a cleaner design, but also through additional added features. The primary objective of this new client is simplification and usability. In this way, various functions such as special projects, parameter settings and statistics can now simply be marked with shortcuts and be called up quickly. Additionally, an extensive template library provides numerous ready-made, immediately accessible solutions. The new template concept, which is now divided into the levels template, boxes and slots, maps the most recommendations requirements realistically.

More in-depth statistics and filter in the Recommendations module
The new release for module prudsys RDE | Recommendations provides extended, more in-depth statistics that allows for the differentiation between recommendation templates and recommendations boxes. In addition to the known and established ratios, collected for all templates, now the recommendation outputs (the so-called prudsys Views) are template-specific and also viewable through the box view. Thus, the user sees the accepted clicks-per-box and the resulting sales amount attributable to each box. With this function, pinpointing exactly where additional revenue is generated is faster and easier than ever before.

Through a more flexible configuration of the recommendation types in the transaction history, it will be possible to discern which elements of the transaction history should be worked on in the future, and in what way. Therefore the user can decide whether the recommendations should be based either on the transaction history in the current session, or only based on transaction data, or whether both databases should develop recommendations together.

Even stronger dynamic price optimization with new algorithms
The module RDE | Pricing, which specializes in the optimization of dynamic pricing based on user behavior, has been expanded to include new algorithms. These allow for price calculation adjustments on virtually any additional parameters (i.e. for holidays, weather). The realtime price adjustment based on the integration of this information is now even faster and more up-to-date. A newly-developed offline simulation can now filter the most effective pricing algorithms for the future, and tests the various pricing algorithms against each other.

Module RDE | Data Cleansing turns into RDE | Search
The module prudsys RDE | Data Cleansing has been continuously developed and expanded to include additional functionalities. In order to better highlight its core functionalities, the module has been given a new name and is now available as prudsys RDE | Search.

Human finger in Idaho trout belongs to wakeboarder

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) ? A human finger found inside a fish at Idaho's Priest Lake has been traced to a wakeboarder who lost four fingers in an accident more than two months earlier.

Fisherman Nolan Calvin found the finger while he was cleaning the trout he caught Sept. 11. He put it on ice and called the Bonner County, Idaho, sheriff's office, the Spokesman-Review newspaper reported.

Detectives were able to get a fingerprint off the severed digit. They matched it to a fingerprint card for Haans Galassi, 31, of Colbert, Wash., and called him Tuesday morning.

Investigators learned that Galassi lost four fingers from his left hand in a June 21 accident on the same lake where the fish was caught.

"The sheriff called me and told me he had a strange story to tell me," Galassi said Tuesday. "He said that a fisherman was out on Priest Lake, and I pretty much knew exactly what he was going to say at that point.

"I was like: Let me guess, they found my fingers in a fish."

The fish was caught about eight miles from where Galassi had lost his fingers, the sheriff's office said.

Galassi had been on a camping trip at the scenic lake when he decided to go wakeboarding. He told the newspaper his hand got caught in a loop in the towline, and he couldn't pull it out before the line tightened behind the boat that was going to pull him.

When he finally broke free, he didn't feel much pain. But then he looked at his hand.

"I pulled my hand out of the water and it had pretty much lopped off all four fingers," he said. "It was a lot of flesh and bone, not a lot of blood."

He was taken by helicopter to a Spokane hospital.

Galassi has been undergoing therapy twice a week for his injured hand. He still has half of his index and pointer fingers on that hand.

"I can still grip things and grab and hold the steering wheel with it," Galassi said.

The sheriff's office offered to return the finger, but Galassi declined.

"I'm like, 'uhhh, I'm good,'" he said.

Detective Sgt. Gary Johnston of the sheriff's office said the agency will keep the digit for a few weeks in case Galassi changes his mind.

"There's still three more, too," Johnston said. "It's hard to say where those are going to end up."

Try These Tips For Managing Your Personal Finance | LoansTop20 ...

Financial stress can drive people to despair. Don?t let your finances overwhelm you and leave you stressed. No matter what your financial problems are, things will get better, especially if you have some financial advice to go by. If you want to fix your financial problems, read this article.

Try cutting costs of your Christmas bills by making presents where they fit in. Instead of spending time shopping, you can spend time being crafty and making your presents. By being a little creative you will save money, and have extra cash in your pocket for other things.

Prepare yourself for all kinds of situations by placing money in savings accounts. These accounts can help finance your major purchases such as a new TV or a vehicle. Consider putting retirement money away! Whatever the purpose, establishing a regular pattern of saving is a wise idea.

Do not fall for scams promising you a better credit score by changing your report. Often, companies will make sweeping promises about what they can do to help you with your credit. There is no fix that will work for every situation, and these companies are not being honest with you. Guaranteeing success is fraudulent.

The frequent flier program is absolutely ideal for anyone who flies often and enjoys saving money or receiving free rewards. There are a lot of credit card companies that reward you with free or reduced airfare for making certain purchases. Your frequent flier miles will constantly increase and are redeemable at thousands of hotels or airlines across the world.

A great way to get a handle on your financial health is to look for bargains and discounts whenever possible. This is not the time for brand loyalty. Buy items for which you have coupons. If you have found no difference in quality or performance between two different brand name items, buy the one you have the coupon for if that will result in the greatest savings!

To avoid a frantic, last minute search for your financial records, it is a good idea to maintain a filing system for these documents. Keep your receipts together, which you can even categorize for ease later. Other documents that you should be sure to save and file in the same place include insurance, sales and bank documents.

You should not borrow any money or open any credit lines unless you have to! While there are surely circumstances in which debt is unavoidable, it makes sense to steer clear of needless obligations such as the purchase of luxury goods that can clearly wait until later. For example, you may need to take out a loan to get a house or vehicle.

Utilizing your own kitchen, rather than a restaurant, is a money saving tip. You should be able to cook a good meal for four for around thirty bucks. Ordering two pizzas and a 2-liter will cost you more than that these days.

Speak with people you?re close to about how you?re doing financially. By being honest about your financial situation you do not have to feel guilty about saying no if they invite you to dinner and you cannot afford to go. If you are not honest about why you cannot go, they might think you are mad at them! Just be honest with your friends about what?s going on with your financial situation.

To avoid wasting your money and splurging too much, put yourself on a cash allowance. Being too restrictive can lead to a sense of lack in your life so, allow some cash on hand for treats. Make sure to limit the amount to a sensible portion of your income so that you don?t over spend, however. This way you can still allow yourself to enjoy little treats without destroying your monthly budget.

You can increase your money by saving up the coins that you collect in your pockets. These errant bills may be used to purchase the winning lottery ticket!

Always review your bank statements. This way you can keep track of the rates and fees. Sometimes people do not review their statement and they might be paying more in fees that they know about. Read your statement carefully each month for the reason.

Apply these tips and start making changes to your lifestyle; you should quickly see a difference. You are better equipped to deal with your personal finances. Now that you can be more optimistic about your financial future, perhaps you know someone else who can use these tips as well.

Romania Chemical Plant Sale Stirs Controversy :: Balkan Insight

Romania's government on Monday is to sign the contract for the sale of its majority stake in chemical producer Oltchim.

The auction was won on September 21 by the businessman and media mogul Dan Diaconescu who offered 203 million lei [45 million euro] for 54.8 per cent of the company.

Diaconescu's bid was double his initial offer and included the backing of a unknown foreign investor, according to reports.

The government said that all the terms of the privatization process were met, and it awaited delivery of the cash by the end of this month.

"From now on Oltchim will belong to the Romanian people. I bought it because I did not want the company to be acquired by a foreign entity,? Diaconescu said.

He added he intended to maintain the company's core activity, and to retain Oltchim's workforce of around 3,500 people.

But several analysts have voiced doubts over whether the winner of the bid will ever make the promised payment.

?I can?t understand how the government accepted an offer from a person who has no expertise, almost no business experience and who just says he is backed by unknown investors,? Varujan Vosganian, a former Economy Minister, said.

?Oltchim is a huge company, which should not be have been sold only on promises,? he added.

Political analyst Cristian Tudor Popescu is another doubter.

?Diaconescu wants only to just promote himself as the saviour of the nation and gain support ahead of the general elections,? he said.

Diaconescu is the owner of a populist TV station, OTV, which in the past has been penalised, among other things, for incitement to racial hatred and for broadcasting a video showing former Prime Minister Emil Boc naked in a sports locker room.

Diaconescu is also leader of People's Party, PP, a party that advocates big tax cuts and higher wages and pensions.

According to recent polls, it may come in third place on around 10 per cent of the vote in the elections due in early December.

In recent months, the government has been pushing forward with a privatisation timetable for the disposal of its majority stake in Oltchim as part of a commitment to economic restructuring being carried out in consultation with the IMF.

Based at Ramnicu Valcea in southern Romania, Oltchim produces caustic soda, petrochemicals, agrochemicals, inorganic products and building materials. The company registered losses for the last five years and has debts of around 500 million euro.

Production at Oltchim stopped last month, with the company apparently suffering from a lack of capital to secure feedstock supplies.

The upcoming privatization has caused industrial unrest, with employees protesting at the plant in Ramnicu Valcea, and 17 executives, including the General Manager, handing in their resignations.

?Too holy? for sex? The problem of a married Jesus

Karen L. King/Harvard University via Reuters

A previously unknown scrap of ancient papyrus written in ancient Egyptian Coptic is pictured in this undated handout photo obtained by Reuters September 18, 2012. The papyrus has four words written in Coptic that provide the first unequivocal evidence that within 150 years of his death, some followers of Jesus, believed him to have been married.

By Becky Bratu, NBC News

If a fourth-century fragment of papyrus that purportedly quotes Jesus telling his disciples about "my wife" is authenticated, it could upend the modern church?s understanding of the ?son of God.?

?If Jesus is a normal human being and he?s sexual, that?s the real fear,? James Tabor, a biblical scholar at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the co-author of books about Jesus and his family, told NBC News. ?You can?t think of Jesus like that because he?s too holy.?

The Bible contains no explicit mentions of Jesus being either married or not married, but few churches have room for the idea of a sexual Jesus. The Catholic Church?s celibate priesthood is built on the belief that Jesus was not married. Eastern Orthodox priests are often married, but the church teachings don?t mention a married Jesus. Protestant ministers are allowed to marry, but there again, it is not common to teach that Jesus himself was married.

Reality check on Jesus and his 'wife'

"I would say that the more conservative groups might be more inclined to be bothered by the idea of a married Jesus, and especially that he might have had a child, god forbid, since that would really raise questions about his 'divinity,' since they see him as fully human and fully God," Tabor subsequently explained in an email.

"Can God sleep with a woman and have a child? It just doesn't fit the concept they want for Jesus," he said.

New questions are being raised about whether Jesus was married after Dr. Karen King, a historian at Harvard Divinity School, found an ancient papyrus with words translated to Jesus referencing a wife. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

The Unification Church, however, does believe that Jesus was supposed to get married, and some of the early teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated Jesus was married and even fathered children, according to Cky Carrigan of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, although that belief is not widespread today.

The Mormon and the Unification Church?s beliefs, however, have more to do with their own theology of marriage rather than with scripture, Ben Witherington III, a New Testament professor at the Asbury Theological Seminary, told NBC News.

Unlike their modern counterparts, there is evidence that some early Christians -- the Valentinian Gnostics -- believed Jesus was married, according to April DeConick, a biblical scholar at Rice University. The recently discovered papyrus, she told NBC News, would be the second piece of evidence from an ancient Christian gospel that early Christians were not bothered by the idea of a married Jesus. The first piece of evidence -- which DeConick said comes from the Gospel of Philip -- identifies Mary Magdalene as Jesus' wife.

Karen L. King, the Harvard Divinity School professor who unveiled the papyrus, cautioned that the discovery does not serve as evidence that the historical Jesus was married.

Karen L. King, the Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard University holds a previously unknown ancient papyrus fragment from Egypt that has four words written in Coptic that provide the first unequivocal evidence that within 150 years of his death, some followers of Jesus, believed him to have been married.

"This new gospel doesn't prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage,? King said in a press release. ?From the very beginning, Christians disagreed about whether it was better not to marry, but it was over a century after Jesus' death before they began appealing to Jesus' marital status to support their positions."

The Christians who eventually became dominant, DeConick said, believed celibacy was the route to heaven.

?Catholicism was deeply shaped by monasticism in its formative period,? Witherington said, adding that he thinks this belief brought about ?a very deficient view of the goodness of human sexuality as a gift from god.?

?There?s just nothing biblical about that,? he argued. But Catholics couldn?t imagine Jesus as married, because that would have ?tainted? his holy image, he said.

DeConick, who explored sex and gender in early Christianity in her book, ?Holy Misogyny,? said that in the ancient world, the female body was considered weak, pitiful and wretched.

Sun Myung Moon, founder of Unification Church, dies at 92

?We have so many hundreds of years of an understanding of sexuality that in some way sex is not divine, it?s not sacred,? she said. ?It?s going to be a long hard road for people to see a figure that they think is god as being engaged in a sexual activity ? even with a wife.?

Witherington believes most churches will likely be ambivalent about a married Jesus because the implications are unclear. But he said some liberal Protestants might even accept the idea that Jesus could have had children in the same way as some Protestant churches no longer teach the doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary.

?It doesn?t mean [the children]'d be as perfect as dad,? he said. ?That would be a hard act to follow whether you?re a wife or a kid.?

The public, however, appears more open to the idea of a married Jesus. Ongoing for centuries, the debate about the possibility that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene was also the subject of author Dan Brown?s bestseller, ?The Da Vinci Code.? Both the book and the recent discovery of the papyrus fragment that reignited the debate have garnered a positive reaction from the public.

?Maybe it makes him more human for us,? Tabor said.

Witherington, who wrote a book debunking some of the statements made in ?The Da Vinci Code,? said he encountered the same ?enormous positive reaction? on his book tour at the time.

?There was such a willingness to believe that what Dan Brown was saying was the gospel about Jesus,? he said.

?Jesus was an early Jew. I don?t think Jesus had any qualms about marriage,? Witherington added. ?But [Jesus] also thinks it was perfectly viable for an able-bodied man to become single for the sake of [god?s] kingdom.?

Frankenweenie #DisneyMoviesEvent Day 1 & 2 - A Mom's Impression

I am having a blast here in LA. Last night we arrived and spent the evening with celebrities? wax one that is!? Madame Tussauds Wax Museum invited us to experience their Hollywood museum.? Some of them were so life like? it was a little weird to be honest.

After Madame Tussauds, we met at Hard Rock Cafe for a welcome dinner and a meet and greet time!? I sat with some bloggers that I had never met before and had a wonderful time! I love meeting new friends and putting faces with friends that I have chatted with online.

Today we will be interviewing cast members from Frankenweenie and then attending the premiere and after party.

Here is a little more about the movie:

From creative genius Tim Burton (?Alice in Wonderland,? The Nightmare Before Christmas?) comes ?Frankenweenie,? a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life?with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor?s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new ?leash on life? can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, ?Frankenweenie? was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which elevates the classic style to a whole new experience.

Look at the sweet little gift bag I received from Disney:

I am so excited to try the Frankenweenie dog collar on Eli.? I hope it is big enough!

Do you have any questions for Robert Capron, Atticus Shaffer and Charlie Tahan?? If so, please let me know.? I would love to ask them!

Stay tuned for more of my adventures from Hollywood!
